Saturday morning adventure! Our entire staff climb

Saturday morning adventure! Our entire staff climbed in the saddle this weekend to school through some challenging obstacles. Teeter-totters, bridges of various widths, stone stairs, water, flags, pool noodles, a flintstones cart, Slim Jim the inflatable tube dude, tarps, and many other spooky challenges. We had so much fun riding together, cheering one another on, learning, and overcoming - on the ground and on horseback! The Foothills Family is excited to welcome Dr. Pate Pollard to the team today. Dr. Pate is a familiar face to some of you. Originally from Morganton, NC, he spent many hours with our practice as a student extern. He will see appointments Monday, and Wednesday through Friday each week, and rotate evening and weekend emergency duty. Dr. Pate and his wife Savannah reside in the Lawndale community with their two dogs, Potter, an English Setter, and Georgianna, a Gordon Setter. Join us in welcoming Dr. Pollard - we know you’ll enjoy getting to know him!

Do you have a plan for your horse’s unexpected medical expenses? An emergency fund, a CareCredit account, or maybe you could partner with Scratch Financial for a quick payment plan.

What about for larger issues - can you pay for colic surgery or another significant issue or injury out of pocket? It is completely acceptable if the answer is “no, my horse will be humanely euthanized if it needs colic surgery or expense exceeds some set amount.” The point is that it’s smart to know this before an emergency arises and have a transportation plan to get them to a referral center if needed.

Horse ownership represents a significant investment of time, money, and resources. While nothing may ease the emotional burden, wise planning can at least help reduce the economic impacts should something serious happen to your horse.

There are many types of insurance coverage available to the horse owner and the conditions can vary widely between companies.

Common types of coverage available for horses are listed (but not limited to what you see) in the graphic. Some equine insurers may require an insurance examination certificate signed by a veterinarian before a policy will be issued for a horse.

There are also several "colic surgery coverage" programs offered by supplement companies, such as SmartPak ColiCare™️,Platinum Performance
Colic Coverage®️, Arenus Animal Health Colic Assurance, or others.

Emotions are high in an emergency. Take the time to think through your options on a healthy day!

We’re headed for a temperature drop this week -

We’re headed for a temperature drop this week - a higher risk time for colic. Be sure to monitor your horse’s water intake this week as they tend to drink less to conserve body heat in cold weather. Consider adding 1-2 tablespoons of plain white salt to their meals early week to drive their thirst and get them well hydrated BEFORE the cold snap. Go for it, even if you leave salt blocks out. Some horses don’t mind if you add some water to their feed to make a mash. Remember, they make more body heat with hay than grain, so if you want to offer a little something extra to warm them up overnight - another flake of hay, not more grain.💧

It’s National Veterinary Technician Week and we wouldn’t miss an opportunity to praise our people! We are so grateful to our technicians and assistants. Katie is a licensed veterinary technician and Makayla is completing her credentials to take the board exam. Not pictured are our assistants Shelby and Megan who are both away from the office for a bit. These ladies wear so many hats in our practice and help deliver exceptional care to our patients every day! Winter weather is more challenging for our aging horses. Fall is the best time to make a solid plan for cooler temperatures and dormant pasture. We recommend screening senior horses for Equine Cushings (PPID) now through mid November. It’s a great time to assess the common health items that steal your horse’s calories - parasites, dental issues, and systemic disease. Contact the office to set up a senior exam for the “experienced” horses in your barn! 🦷💉🩺🐴🍁#seniorhorse #equine #idppid #horse

These are the upper and lower “caps” or decidu

These are the upper and lower “caps” or deciduous “baby” teeth of the 4th premolar of a 3.5 years old warmblood horse. The horse displayed odd chewing behavior when eating. A sedated exam revealed that the lower caps had been displaced as they loosened and caused a sore on the horse’s tongue. These caps were all loose and were removed to make the horse more comfortable as the adult premolar fully erupts over the next 6 months. 🦷

Here are some sharp, long tusks trimmed from a pet pig. Tusks can grow in odd directions and cause wounds to the lips and face, and can also be used in defense against other pigs in a group. Tusks can seriously injure a person, sometimes unintentionally. Tusks can be trimmed easily above the level of the sensitive pulp horn without causing pain to the animal making them safer to be around and less likely to injure others in the barnyard. #pigs
